First woman in India to get death penalty

For the first time in independent India, a woman will undergo capital punishment. This woman convict will be at the only gallows at Mathura jail.

What was her crime?

Thirteen years ago, In Uttarpradesh, Amroha district, a schoolteacher's only daughter Shabnam Ali went on a killing spree with her boyfriend. Shabnam was 25 at the time, and killed seven of her family members, including her parents and a 10-month-old nephew. Shabnam's mercy petition was rejected by the supreme court and now the president of India has also rejected her mercy plea. The proceedings to execute Shabnam have already started at Mathura.

How Shabnam committed the murders?

Shabnam's love for Saleem drove her to drug her family members with sleeping pills. So, that she could visit him secretly on that fateful night she drugged the family, and when they were all unconscious she killed them one by one. After the murder, Saleem fled but Shabnam stayed in. The next she raised a hue and cry claiming unknown criminals broke and killed her family, after four days of investigation it became evident to the police that the murders were committed by Shabnam and Saleem.

In Mathura prison, there are gallows constructed especially for women. But since India's independence, no woman convict has been awarded capital punishment until Shabnam.

According to the jail superintendent, the wait is now to set a date for execution and issue a death warrant. Once that is done Shabnam will be hanged.

Shabnam will be hanged by Pawan, a hangman who has already visited the gallows twice. Pawan has also executed the punishment of four convicts in the NIRBHAYA case.

IS SOUTH INDIAN WOMEN ARE HAPPIER THAN NORTH INDIAN WOMEN?

Srimathi Jayaprakash on Unsplash                                                                               If you were to ask an Indian women, to prefer between living in North India or South India, imagine what would her answer be? Most women would prefer to live in South India. And it shouldn't come as a surprise. In South India, women marry late, live longer and are more educated. The gender gap in education is 26% of the north and while for the south it is only 9%. Other than economic and social benefits, safety is another factor that could explain the woman's preference. Compared to North India there could be less crime against women in the South. It could be possible even in the states like Kerala, have high crime rates against women( According to data). But it is not clear why the cr...

french colonies present day

France borders eight countries. But actually, it borders more than eight countries. And in fact, its longest border isn't even the one with Belgium or the one with Spain. It is the one with Brazil. What is going on here? We know only one version of France that is the l'hexagon. It is also called the La France Metropole. It is the mainland of France. It is the France you probably think of when you think of France in Europe. But there is another France, it is called France d'outre-mer, or the Overseas France. Overseas French accounts for almost 20% of all French land. And a whopping 97% of its ocean territory, nearly 3 million French citizens live here. The Overseas France is peculiar. France d’outre-mer includes far-flung tropical islands, remote archipelagos with penguins, and weird-looking, uninhabited atolls around the world. There is lobster fishing, scientific research, nuclear weapons testing, and military exercises. And the mind-blowing fact is that Overseas France is...

How china became so powerful

the world's factory   Back in old days, this part of the world used to be the economic super power of the planet. The dynasties discovered everything from compass, from printing to making paper, gunpowder. They would make huge expeditions around the globe. This is China, the middle kingdom, right next to India. Around the 1800's that's where it started changing. In Europe and the US, a major revolution started taking place(science, machines, weapons, industries). With the new power these countries started to expand to take over large parts of land. China remained a great civilisation, as the west started showing up, knocking on China’s door with their big guns. China couldn’t compete with the large fire power. So China compromised them with their lands(HONG KONG). The industrial revolution didn’t start in the same way as it did in the west. And in the middle of 1800, China stood in its massive decline. The situation got even worse when it’s neighbour Japan invaded. China’s ...
